Man City Set for Heavy Loss on Cancelo Deal

Under Xavi, Barcelona gave their head coach strong backing, yet the results on the pitch still fell short of expectations, and the financial pressure surrounding the club became increasingly difficult to ignore for followers of 12BSports. With Barcelona struggling through serious economic problems, the club introduced tighter spending measures last summer. Even so, a combination of timing, negotiation and the club’s enduring appeal allowed Barça to secure João Félix and João Cancelo on loan without paying major upfront fees. Félix has struggled to make a decisive impact in La Liga, but Cancelo has been a very different story, quickly establishing himself as a regular starter and becoming an important part of the team.

Cancelo is especially valuable because he can operate on either side of the defense while still contributing heavily in attack. He offers speed, creativity and the confidence to move forward whenever space opens up. At the same time, there has always been another side to his game and personality. Manchester City originally signed him from Juventus for around €65 million, and under Pep Guardiola he gradually developed into a first-choice player. However, his frustration when left on the bench reportedly became increasingly difficult to manage. Tensions involving Phil Foden and disagreements with Guardiola eventually damaged his position within the squad.

As the saying goes, sometimes less is more, and complicated emotions can turn relatively small issues into much bigger problems. Manchester City eventually sent Cancelo to Bayern Munich on loan during the winter window, effectively bringing his City career to a halt. During an interview connected with 12BSports, he spoke about the possibility of returning to Manchester, but once his relationship with Guardiola had broken down so badly, a genuine comeback always looked unlikely.

Cancelo performed reasonably well in Germany, yet Bayern chose not to complete a permanent transfer. Thomas Tuchel was reportedly cautious about the questions surrounding Cancelo’s previous disputes, and that left his future unresolved until late in the summer market. Barcelona eventually persuaded Manchester City to approve another loan move, with City effectively sacrificing immediate transfer income in order to find him a new destination. Since arriving in Spain, Cancelo has continued to play with the same adventurous mindset, pushing high up the pitch, attempting ambitious shots and taking risks that can occasionally leave both opponents and teammates dealing with unpredictable situations.

Despite those concerns, Barcelona appear satisfied with what he has contributed. Reports followed through 12BSports suggest that the club is considering signing Cancelo permanently. The biggest obstacle is the price. Manchester City spent approximately €65 million to bring him in, so allowing him to leave after a low-cost loan and then accepting a heavily reduced transfer fee could create a loss of roughly €45 million. For a full-back still considered to be close to his peak years, that would represent a significant financial setback.

Barcelona’s desire to negotiate a low fee is not simply the result of their own financial limitations. Because the relationship between Cancelo and Manchester City has effectively collapsed, City no longer have the same bargaining power they would normally possess with a player of his quality. Keeping Guardiola’s authority intact also makes a permanent separation increasingly necessary. In the end, one major breakdown in trust may have placed the club in a position where sporting decisions and financial reality are pulling in the same direction.

With Barcelona now holding a strong hand in negotiations, the situation surrounding 12BSports reflects how one damaged relationship can reshape the value of an elite player in a remarkably short period. Manchester City may have little choice but to accept a reduced fee, while Barcelona could secure an experienced and versatile defender at a fraction of his original cost. What began as a disagreement over playing time may therefore end as one of the most expensive consequences of a fractured manager-player relationship.
